  The Facts:
It's difficult to believe that this 70,000-acre park 30 miles north of San Francisco has only existed since 1962. In the park's brief life, it's become one of the most popular destinations along the Golden State's famous shoreline, attracting more than two million visitors a year to its windswept beaches, jagged cliffs and centuries-old forests.

  The Features:
By far the most popular attraction in the park is the Point Reyes Lighthouse. Situated on the rocky tip of the peninsula, the lighthouse is one of California's best whale-watching locales, especially during the gray-whale migration from December to May, when whales frequently swim within a few hundred yards of shore. Other popular attractions in the park include the earthquake trail along the infamous San Andreas Fault and the Tomales Point Tule Elk preserve.
