The
Scene:
With the highest elevation of any ski resort in California,
Mammoth lives up to its name in a big way. The mountain is
one of the largest in the West--and one of the most
spectacular. The 11,053-foot elevation makes for dry snow
conditions and awesome scenery, with views west toward the
Yosemite high country and east out over the entire Owens
Valley.
The
Slopes:
No doubt about it,
the runs at Mammoth are some of the best in California. For
Bay Area skiers, however, Mammoth's only real drawback is
getting to the slopes in the first place. The mountain is
primarily a destination for skiers from Los Angeles, who can
blast north up Highway 395. To get to the resort from the
Bay Area requires driving four hours east on Highway 80,
past Tahoe to Highway 395, then heading south almost 150
miles. For skiers coveting dry snow and true high-altitude
slopes, however, the effort is well worth it.
