The
Atmosphere:
The whimsical dining room is the antithesis of the flashy
downtown dining scene. Whether or not you find the
harlequin-and-puppet theme appealing is your own business,
but no one could accuse the restaurant of lacking a human
touch. The staff is never less than friendly and solicitous,
although service can tend towards the bumbling.
The Food:
Using classic French cuisine as a starting point, chef-owner
Roland Passot cooks with the precision of a jeweler: Inside
a crunchy potato shell, find a sushi-like roll of ruby-red
squab and creamy quail, themselves stuffed with minced
vegetables. Silvery, luxuriant mackerel tartare is a study
in monochrome, topped with steel-grey caviar aside a tiny
dollop of mayonnaise. The chef's artistry is enthralling,
but the flavors never take a back seat to the visuals, and
you'd be hard-pressed to leave this most unusual restaurant
unsatisfied.
