The
Atmosphere:
Even a trip to the loo feels special at this sprawling
eatery, located on the ground floor of Hotel Monaco. Without
a doubt one of the city's grandest rooms, this
high-ceilinged hall evokes fin de siecle Paris. It's
decorated, strangely enough, with sculptures of giant
anthropomorphic rabbits. Service tends toward the informal
and chatty but not the bunny-rabbit quick, which is fine
unless you're actually here to eat.
The Food:
Given the magnificent surroundings, the food has a lot to
live up to. For the most part, the menu plays it safe and
comes out ahead. Look for classics like hearty braised beef
shortribs over barley, the requisite foie gras appetizer and
a nice twist on polenta with mushrooms in the form of a
polenta souffle. Treks off the beaten path, such as crispy
tai snapper and tiny clams in a saffron broth, can be less
rewarding.
