The
Atmosphere:
Widely regarded as the most European of North Beach's many
Euro-style cafes, this Italianate cafe attracts a strong
crowd of homesick expatriates. Clean, bright and ever so
chic, it's a pleasant break from the action on Columbus
Avenue. When foot traffic along Columbus is light, the
sidewalk tables offer prime seating; otherwise, seek out a
free table alongside the large sliding glass windows that
overlook the avenue.
The Food:
For a light lunch,
consider a plate of fresh mozzarella with roasted peppers
and a glass of Chianti. Simple, inexpensive snacks, foccacia
sandwiches, and desserts are also available, but the
superior coffee drinks are what explain the legion of
regular customers. Try the caffe freddo Sambuca, an iced
shot of espresso laced with anise-flavored liqueur, or just
enjoy a perfectly frothed cappucino. |
