The
Scene:
Banana Republic's newly remodeled flagship store rounds the
corner of Grant Street and heads down Post Street, staking
out a 37,000 square-foot claim in Union Square shopping.
This is one of the largest stores in the company, which has
grown in leaps and bounds since 1987, when it began in Mill
Valley.
The
Goods:
Banana Republic
men's and women's clothes are minimalist and classically
cut. The company takes more design cues from American
designer Ralph Lauren than anyone else. The chief difference
is that the gainfully employed masses can afford these
chinos, turtlenecks and leather jackets. Even the
not-so-gainfully employed can find a great sale price on
shirts and pants. The store includes a fragrance area and
all standard accessories, from hats to shoes. The home
section features chenille pillows, velvet frames, glassware,
dishware and towels, proving the store's appeal is about
more than fashionable outerwear.
